Dream Cats

I’m not on duty now; I mention this because I’m not supposed to post on social media when at work.

Last night, I had a dream with at least two different scenes. In an earlier scene, I was somewhere, I think in a restaurant, talking with a woman seated to my left, and then also with someone else seated to my right; the two women became involved in talking with each other as well as with me. Then I was elsewhere, I think on a beach, and there was a large golden cat, I think belonging to the first woman. I don’t mean a metallic cat, but a live, furry cat whose coloration varied over his (her?) body, but was more or less golden in color. I managed to pet the cat, who showed some affection toward me. Then there was also another large cat, more gray in color, but also not monochrome, and I got to make friends with this cat, too.

Then I woke up, and it was the middle of the night, not time to get up. I stayed awake for a while, but did manage to get more sleep before morning. At least, I got to enjoy some cat petting, even if my furry friends were imaginary.
A few minutes before the alarm clock was set to go off, I woke up from a dream more coherent and complicated than what I usually remember. There were two military forts, one low on a hill, and the other, of the opposing side, higher up the hill, or up an outdoor staircase (dream logic here). There was a young man, perhaps a junior officer, at the lower fort, and a young woman (potential romantic interest) at the upper fort; she may have been the daughter of some big shot. The commandants of the two forts would fight if things came to open war, but in the meantime they behaved chivalrously, and the commandant of the upper fort did not kill the young man, or keep him a prisoner, when he was caught somewhere where he should not have been (at least, should not have been from the perspective of the upper fort people).

I dreamed a couple of episodes about these people, and when I woke up, I had a feeling that if I had continued dreaming, I at least might have learned more about the actions of these people, and would have witnessed a complete story, instead of just a couple of incomplete minor adventures. I don’t know whether a longer dream would really have been coherent and satisfying, but I did have a feeling of having missed a full story.
Last night, I had fallen asleep and was dreaming; someone spoke to me in the dream, and I replied to her, but the act of speaking was not limited to the dream. Nerve signals actually went to my mouth, which opened as I attempted to say a word or two. I don’t think I actually spoke coherent words, but I did become aware of opening my mouth and trying, which made me realize that I had been asleep and dreaming, and so I woke up.

I did get more sleep later.
I was dreaming earlier, when someone said something about, or I came across some mention of, two men who were influential in the development of early Christian thought. (These men were not part of real history, so far as I know; one of their names totally escapes me, while I semi-remember the name of the other, with uncertainty about the spelling.) The thing is, wanting to know about them brought up a webpage including blue hyperlinks, which I was able to click on to read about these nonexistent historical figures.

People may find this a mildly amusing instance of the kind of waking world we live in affecting the content of dreams.
I sometimes have had the experience of what I call narrative dreams. In a regular dream, I act and am acted on within the dream, and I may hear what other people in the dream tell me. In a narrative dream, there is also a narrative voice telling me what's going on. If a non-narrative dream is like a play, a narrative dream is like a novel, or a scene from one, where there is an authorial voice describing events, as well as dialogue among the characters.

Do other people have this kind of dream experience?
Last night, I woke up at about 4:00 AM, drank some water, used the plumbing, and went back to bed, only it seemed that I couldn't sleep, so I left the house (I think I was staying in somebody's house), and took a walk down the street. There were several cars with stereo systems playing music I didn't like, so it wasn't very calming. I went back to the house, and one attempt to open the door just led to a coat closet, not a proper entry.

Someone else outside the house talked with me, and this person seemed at first rather androgynous, but then seemed to be a middle-aged woman with shortish hair (for a woman). Then it became clear to me that the person was actually a blond teenage boy with longish hair (for a boy).

I think that it was around then that I woke up, and found that it was a bit before 5:00 AM. Fortunately, I was able to sleep a bit more before it was time to get up and go to work.
