Plums and Math
Jun. 10th, 2026 09:28 amAt the farmers’ market on Sunday, I bought a quart of the delicious plums that have spoiled me for supermarket plums. One of the people working at the stand, a seventeen year old girl who isn’t big on mathematics, commented on my t-shirt, which showed a sort of funnel and the mathematical expression for the Schwartzschild radius of a black hole. I said that I had actually bought it for what was in the back, so I turned around to show the vendors the words, “And God said [vector equations] and there was light.”
I explained that those were Maxwell’s equations for electromagnetism.
