Trump’s Attitude Toward War Heroes

This is a bit late for Memorial Day, but I thought I would link to this article from The Atlantic on how Donald Trump apparently sees America’s war dead as losers and suckers.

A normal politician, even if he were not as brave or patriotic as he should be, would at least be able to speak some reasonably suitable words, comply with the social norms, and tell people that he honored his country’s veterans and its war dead. It has been said of Donald Trump, that his inability to simulate normal human behavior goes little remarked upon due to his other faults. And yet tens of millions of Americans believe that this man is a patriot, and is fighting on their side.

Perhaps not surprisingly, even though the military is fairly right-wing, even into the insanity that passes for conservatism these days, they are not big on Trump.

That’s reassuring to hear. Despite corrupt political machines, it used to be largely taken for granted that both parties would accept the results of elections — litigate, perhaps, but not resort to an attempted coup d’etat by a mob or a corrupted military. Now, the question of who will be allowed to take and hold office may depend on which side the armed forces are on.
