Despite corrupt political machines, it used to be largely taken for granted that both parties would accept the results of elections — litigate, perhaps, but not resort to an attempted coup d’etat by a mob or a corrupted military. Now, the question of who will be allowed to take and hold office may depend on which side the armed forces are on.
