Aug. 7th, 2018 11:50 pmThe title of this post does not refer to America in the age of Trump, but to a book of that title by Professor Nancy MacLean, which (I have not read it) claims that libertarians have been strongly influenced by the economist James Buchanan, and that he in turn was a segregationist strongly influenced by the thought of the nineteenth century Southern statesman John Calhoun. She has been accused of presenting very little actual evidence for her thesis, and of ignoring evidence to the contrary.
One of my Georgist friends, whom I last encountered at the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation Board meeting in May was much taken with her book, and not persuaded by my second hand criticisms.
