To continue with Saturday, July 29, 2017, and specifically with the book launch for the annotated critical edition of Progress and Poverty, we saw a video with the mayor of Barrie, Ontario, the town where Erich Jacoby-Hawkins lives; I think the mayor’s name is Jeff Lehman or something similar.

We saw an empty lot in Barrie, unused for a decade. Why? Because of low carrying charges for a vacant lot.

Then we saw and heard Frank Peddle interview the mayor. The property tax is made to provide services to property, not to people. Policy is at cross-purposes with taxation.

The mayor, who is sympathetic to Georgism, if not necessarily hard core, said that Barrie is one of four municipalities in Ontario with single detached houses at a 1 to 1 ratio with apartment buildings and condos. In Toronto, the ratio is 3 to 1, so apartments are unaffordable. Very many people in their twenties live with their parents.

Professor Peddle presented the mayor with a copy of Progress and Poverty.

Then (returning to the actual conference, it the video), Brendan Hennigan asked what we, especially the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation, should do. Nate Blair said to improve Wikipedia on Georgism and LVT. Gib Halverson said that nuts and bolts can be boring. Show zeal! Explain why it matters.

And that was the end of that session.
