To continue with the book launch on July 29, 2017, for the annotated critical edition of Progress and Poverty, someone asked what needed to be done to increase participation, connection, and volunteerism? How could the Annotated Works of Henry George help achieve our goal?
Gib Halverson spoke. He was taking a class where the teacher mentioned unearned increments. Only Gib came up after class, and asked further questions, which led to his learning about Progress and Poverty. Someone (maybe Gib) mentioned the train conductor who gave a copy of P&P to Tom Johnson, who read it, was unpersuaded by the attempt of his lawyers to refute it, and so became an active Georgist.
Remember: Half the people have a high school diploma or less, and mostly don’t read books. Many college graduates have the attitude, “I’m done. Now to enjoy life, not study.”
We discussed various aspects. As someone remarked, each of us has a story of how we came to Georgism.
To be continued.
