Work, Basset Hound, and "Cool!"
Jan. 21st, 2018 06:27 pmDespite the government shutdown, I will be at work until and unless I hear otherwise. The Patent Office has its own funds, being financed out of fees, not taxes.
On my way to the farmers' market this morning, I met a couple walking an amiable, if rather too well-padded, lady basset hound. The basset and I had just started to make friends when another man came by, walking a dog of some other breed, and the two dogs greeted each other.
There was a food drive this afternoon in the entranceway of Giant Foods, with at least one adult and a couple of youngsters asking people to get canned goods, pasta, cereal, and peanut butter for the local food assistance center. I bought a few items, in addition to my own groceries, and handed them over when I was finished shopping. I then asked one of the volunteers, who looked to be about thirteen, whether he had ever wondered why we have poverty and unemployment to begin with.
He replied that he had thought about this a lot. I told him a bit about Henry George, his most famous book, and websites where one could learn a bit about Georgist ideas, and mentioned that I had read Progress and Poverty as a teenager.
He seemed genuinely interested, and said "Cool!"
Just maybe, I've set someone on the road to being a Georgist activist and a Board member of Georgis
