I Beg to Differ
Aug. 1st, 2025 03:58 pmThe Toastmasters meeting yesterday included Table Topics, in which the Table Topics master poses questions which people have to answer on their feet. One of our members is an Indian-American who seems to take her Hindu religion seriously. The question posed to her was who she would have dinner with if she could choose anyone, living or dead, and she chose Prime Minister Modi. She spoke of also liking the Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda, who attended the 1883 Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1893. However, she thought that Mr. Modi had accomplished more than any monk, or something like that.
I must say that I would not care to dine with Narendra Modi, who seems to have been more or less complicit in the massacre of Muslims by Hindus, has been working to erode freedom and the rule of law in India, and whose goondas assassinate a Sikh dissident in Canada, and tried to murder another one in the United States. I would rather share a meal with a member of the opposition, or with a courageous Indian journalist.
