Pestered by the Sleazy
Dec. 23rd, 2023 07:53 pmBack on Tuesday, when I was at home teleworking, and some people would be eating dinner or preparing it, my phone rang. I picked it up, and at first no one replied to my hello, indicating predictive dialing. Then someone did speak, and assumed that I was having trouble paying my credit card bills. I told him no, and said that I had received two credit card bills lately, and that on the previous day, I had gone over the billing statement, written a check and mailed it. I still had to take care of the other bill.
By that time, he wasn’t listening; he didn’t have the courtesy to apologize for bothering me, and say goodbye, although to be fair, his employer would probably not have approved of his wasting time that way. This is one instance of my being pestered by people who are likely to be more or less crooked.
Here’s another kind of pestering: since the ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court that Donald Trump is to be excluded from the ballot as having committed insurrection, I have received a number of indignant emails asking me to contribute to a Trumpublican victory, whether purporting to come from Dishonest Donald himself, from Marjorie Taylor Green, from Elise Stefanik, or from other politicians. I have been unsubscribing and deleting, but somehow, some supplier of email addresses thinks that I am one of Trump’s chumps.

We also get 'YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO COMPENSATION!' or tax refunds or similar nonsense, but not as much as the Google Ad ones. And I never say 'hello' at work, it's always '(library name), may I help you?' as these robodialers are programmed to listen for 'hello'.
