On Saturday the eleventh, I was largely on my own, so I did a little walking around, some reading, and some napping, but in the evening, the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation held a banquet at a restaurant called Mistral, for its directors, including a woman who, as I understand it, had just been elected to the Board, or would soon officially be, its staff, some spouses, and myself. There were hours d’oeuvres, and then multiple courses, and the Schalkenbach people and the restaurant had been considerate enough to include vegan options for me. Near the beginning, various toasts were proposed, including toasts to Georgists who had died, and we sipped from our champagne flutes.

One of my friends had spoken to me in advance, and provided a written reminder, so I gave the toast I have given on multiple occasions at Georgist conferences: “To those who, seeing the vice and misery that spring from the present unequal distribution of privilege, feel the possibility of a higher social state, and would strive for its attainment.” That is the dedication of Progress and Poverty.

After the dinner, several people were summoned, and gifts of recognition were handed out. I was one of them, in thanks for having made a substantial contribution to the library, causing one of its rooms to be named the Francoise Rosen Reading Room. I was able to speak a few words of thanks for my gift, which was the same as the gifts then presented to several other people. I am now the owner of a Henry George bobblehead, and of a small stand to put it on. Having survived the return trip to Arlington, packed in my suitcase, the bobblehead now has a place in my bedroom.

Following the dinner, I returned to the Nassau Inn, went to sleep, and caught a train back to Union Station Sunday morning. In the aftermath of my brief vacation, I have returned to work, and to my usual activities.
