Ted Cruz Grovels
Jan. 9th, 2022 05:56 pmTed Cruz has apologized to Tucker Carlson for accurately describing the January 6 insurrection as a violent terrorist attack; this was, since he is a Trumpublican, a gaffe by Michael Kinsley’s definition: a gaffe is not a lie, a gaffe is when a politician accidentally tells the truth.
I would like to see Senator Cruz removed from public office, and replaced by a principled classical liberal, but I do have some sympathy for him. I am reminded of Macauley’s History of England, in which the author wrote of a certain late seventeenth century nobleman that, like many people, he had enough of a conscience to make him ashamed of his actions, but not enough to keep him from doing wrong. Since Ted Cruz is neither a moron nor a sincere, dedicated fascist, he knows that Donald Trump is unfit for public office, and that the attempt to stop the election from being certified was a violent terrorist attack; and he let the truth slip out. It must pain him to some degree not to be honest, but not enough for him to fully and consistently speak the truth, and be primaried and probably defeated by a Trumpist.
