Meeting a Smithie
Jul. 25th, 2021 12:21 amAt the farmers’ market last weekend, I spotted a couple, the man of which was wearing a t- shirt saying, “My girlfriend is a graduate of Smith College,” or words to that effect. Smith, in case you didn’t know, is a women’s college a few miles from Amherst.
I greeted the girlfriend, saying that I was an Amherst alum. She asked me how I had liked it, and I said that it had had its ups and downs, that I had enjoyed learning, but had had “problems you would not believe with the administration.”
She replied that she would believe it. I don’t know when she attended Smith, and presumably interacted with some Amherst students, but she seemed definitely younger than I am. I guess that the Amherst administration remained messed up for years after my graduation (which came close to being my expulsion), or perhaps she had had experiences of her own with administrators at Smith or elsewhere.
