A Pox on Both Their Houses
Apr. 29th, 2021 11:47 pmPresident Biden, doing his best not to let a crisis go to waste, proposes vast increases in federal spending, giveaways and special favors to Democratic constituencies, and throwing hundreds of thousands of independent contractors out of work by a bill (the PRO Act) to protect and expand union jobs. Trump, when asked about the consequences of his fiscal irresponsibility down the road, replied that he wouldn’t be around then. I do not believe that Joe Biden approaches Trump’s level of malignant narcissism, but what does he think that the results of “going big” will be?
Does he believe that since deficits and the national debt have not ruined the country yet, the scolds who warn of future problems will always be wrong? Does he believe in the Keynesian idea that big spending is good for the country, and even if it may cause some difficulties, we would return to the Great Depression without it? Does he believe his own rhetoric? The answers to at least the second and third questions are that he probably does.
A few days ago, I received a letter appealing for donations from Republican Senator Ron Johnson; he says some things with which I agree, and I might contribute ito his re-election campaign if the Republicans had any commitment to fiscal responsibility, or if Senator Johnson had not included an authoritarian-populist denunciation of the Mainstream Media and Big Tech. As is, though, a pox on both their houses.
