I was taking a walk earlier this evening, when I heard a scrabbling sound to my right, and saw an animal climbing out of a dumpster. At first I thought it was a large cat, but then I saw the ringed tail, and realized that it was a raccoon. The dumpster was on a strip between rows of cars in an apartment parking lot; I walked on a little, and then made a U turn, and as I walked back the other way, I saw the masked creature lying low near the dumpster, definitely a raccoon.
I don’t recall ever seeing a raccoon around here before, although I should be astonished that they exist, seeing as how humans provide food sources for them.

Date: 2022-10-11 09:44 pm (UTC)Where I used to live, there were a few chubby raccoons who would come by for food in the evening. At the same time I was feeding Sunburst (a feral rescue).
Linus, Neutron and Tesla (but mostly Linus) would take turns blocking raccoons from stealing Sunburst’s food until Sunburst was done eating.
The raccoons were generally friendly and respected the authority of Linus.
