A few days ago Reason online included an article on globalization and its discontents; among other things, the article discusses the thought of Karl Polanyi, and I remember my late friend Lindy Davies talking about Polanyi’s ideas at a Georgist conference some years ago. Many people are not happy with free trade and globalization, and with some reason, but one thing which the article does not say is that the problem is that the increased per capita GNP which results from free trade tends to go to the owners of land, instead of the workers. Henry George understood things better a hundred and forty years ago.
