Heat Wave This Week

I don’t keep my apartment very cool in summer, but the air conditioners were kept busy today; to the extent they were powered by burning fossil fuel, they were likely contributing to future hot days. When I went for a walk after nine in the evening, it was still quite hot, as well as being humid.

Orwell Remembered

Some years ago, I posted a weblog entry (I was on LiveJournal back then) saying that when George Orwell was my age, he was dead already. I can now say that when George Orwell was my age, he had been dead for a decade.

I’m generally healthy, and look years younger than I am, but time’s arrow flies. I wish I had had more impact on the world, but I do what I can, and am known to some friends and a circle of Georgists. As to Orwell, his writings contributed to my education, and his observations on the human ability to believe and not believe at once, and to believe what conflicts with the facts in front of one’s nose, have proven all too pertinent these past five years.
