Borshch

A few hours ago, I made borshch for dinner, with beets, potatoes, and other ingredients. One of the potatoes was an ordinary red potato (with a white interior) from the supermarket, but two others were exotic purple potatoes from the farmers’ market. They may have added to the flavor and color of the result.
To continue with the charrette on the afternoon of Monday, August 27 (not precisely part of the conference): Rick Rybeck said that the wage in per year per resident. A higher land tax would only cost the average resident $80, because much of the land value is in downtown commercial property.

Joshua Vincent said that land value taxation has been tried in Pennsylvania towns and elsewhere. Allentown went two-rate in 1996 by a popular vote.

Lindy Davies said that San Francisco after the earthquake pretty much had land value taxation, because most non-land real estate had been destroyed, which helps explain the city’s speedy recovery. New York City in the 20s and 30s had a high level of LVT, because there was a ten year tax abatement on new house construction.

Joshua Vincent said that Governor Hogan supported for Purple Line, but cut funding for the East-West Red Line, which would serve Baltimore. Baltimore will have to find ways to fix its problems without much help from the governor.

And that was essentially the end of the afternoon charrette.
