Jul. 17th, 2018 12:09 amThere is a not-too-discreditable explanation for a politician insulting his country’s allies: He may merely be an ignorant, xenophobic yahoo who speaks out of a combination of personal venom and a desire to appear to the more benighted folks back home like an alpha male and a boss who looks after his country’s interests. Merely.
There may be a reasonably creditable explanation for a politician being too polite and obsequious to the dictator of a largely hostile power: He may think that it will do no good to shoot off his mouth, and that it is best to be conciliatory and avoid needless provocations.
But how does one account for the same politician doing both?
It seems that there are two possible basic explanations: The first is that he’s a spiteful bully and a coward who truckles to power. As a would-be autocrat, he admires and envies actual autocrats like Putin and Kim Jong Eun. The second is that the Russians have kompromat on him, and he is acting as their agent to act against American interests, and clear their way to dominate Europe.
Either way, Trump is grossly unfit for high public office, and should be impeached and removed from office as soon as possible. The time has come for the Republicans to develop some backbone, and put patriotism and devotion to what used to be their supposed principles above short-term electoral advantage.
