Rabbit

As I was taking a walk yesterday evening, I found myself walking behind a rabbit. (Fortunately for the rabbit, this wasn’t forty years ago, so I was not accompanied by a beagle.) He would scamper a bit, then freeze, which might have made him hard to spot in a meadow, especially in the late twilight, but he was on a sidewalk much lighter than his own fur. As I approached, he would would run a little further, and freeze again.

Finally, I spoke, telling him that I didn’t mean to chase him, but —

I don’t suppose that he understood, but this time, he scampered forward and to the left, slipping through a gap in a fence, and onto someone’s lawn.

I continued my walk without, so far as I am aware, further distressing any small herbivores.
