Telephone Solicitation

I got a phone call Friday, and after saying hello a couple of times, I heard a young woman saying something about being with the Young Republicans, and seeking contributions “from Republicans like you” to help re-elect President Donald Trump.

“I was a Republican,” I said (oversimplifying slightly), “before Dishonest Donald’s hostile takeover of the Republican Party.”

She asked whether they could count on me for a contribution (it was probably in her script).

“Did you hear what I just said?” I asked.

That ended the call. If I could do it over again, I would try to be a little more polite, but I would not conceal my opinion of DJT.

Script, indeed:  That was almost certainly an automated call.  Their deceit is eerie and deft:  One of their tricks is to have the supposed young female operator say, with an embarrassed laugh, “Oh, my headset was off - can you hear me now?”  Your answer, “Yes,” is then deliberately used as permission, authorization, whatever, and can be produced as evidence that you did agree!

The No Call List is history.  I answer no calls that I do not recognize.  If it’s real and important, they’ll leave a voice message.  These calls never do.
