To continue with the afternoon of Wednesday, July 24, 2019, our next session was with Steven Shafarman, author of Basic Income Imperative, speaking on “Basic Income and Land Value Tax.” He said that he had become interested in the idea of basic income in Santa Barbara in the mid-80’s. He was introduced to Jeff Smith (a Georgist whom I know) and Gary Flo (?), whom I don’t believe that I know.
Green Party. He moved to DC; Santa Barbara is a great place to retire to, but Steve Shafarman wasn’t ready to retire. He said that the basic income has something for everyone: liberals, conservatives, Greens, and libertarians. All agree that the current system is dysfunctional. He mentioned USBIG. Some economists and Georgists support it. A carbon tax combined with a citizens’ dividend would be a good idea.
The Reverend William Barber and the Poor People’s Campaign are anti-poverty advocates against a carbon tax. We should emphasize dividend, then carbon tax.
Thomas Paine advocated land value taxation and a citizens’ dividend in Agrarian Justice. These days, there’s the Alaska Permanent Fund, etc. How do we present these ideas clearly and simply so that people will want to learn more?
To be continued.
