ndrosenI know it’s been a while since my last post about this. I’m still reporting the morning of Wednesday, July 24, and Dan Sullivan was speaking. This followed the recorded presentation by Edward Dodson, who was ill, and not present in person.
George was a free trader. Some workers were, and some were definitely opposed. Anarcho-Communists tried to join Knights of Labor groups, to take them over, and if that failed, disrupt them.
He referred to the complete transcript of the Haymarket trial. Leftists have told Dan that the Haymarket bomb throwers were framed, but you can look up how violent they were. There were instructions on how to make serrated pipe bombs, and throw them behind policemen.
There was infiltration of labor unions by socialists and others, so American labor unions became closed to outsiders and suspicious. That includes being suspicious of Georgist ideologues.
Samuel Gompers wrote an article about what could be done for labor, and he did not include the single tax. Joseph Dana denounced the article. Gompers wrote a polite letter saying that he was pro-LVT, but he hadn’t included it because his article had been about what could be done for labor at once. (Samuel Gompers had gone on bicycle rides with Henry George.)
Joseph Dana printed the article, and doubled down on his criticism! Lesson: Don’t make enemies of people who are insufficiently enthusiastic on your side.
Dan Sullivan had something else to say, that Henry George had apologized for having been anti-coolie. Never apologize. The Social Justice Warriors will use that proof of guilt.
Bob Jene has something to say after the talk. Someone threw a bomb in Haymarket Square, but did the people who were on trial actually throw a bomb? Bob Jene disputes it.
(I have a comment, and this is after the fact, not something I said at the conference: You should apologize for genuine error or wrongdoing. However, you should not give an undeserved apology to a crybully who is determined to use anything you say against you; you should not apologize for wha5 was not wrong, or which you did not do.)
