A Pair of Columns
Oct. 3rd, 2019 12:30 amTuesday’s Washington Post had a pair of columns, one by former Republican Senator Jeff Flake, and one by pundit Hugh Hewitt. Flake’s piece was titled, “Fellow Republicans, there’s still time to save your souls,” and said that whether or not they aided in impeaching Trump, they should at least oppose re-electing him.
Hewitt’s column was titled, “Want the truth? Stay away from the fringes.” Hewitt opposes “an impeachment show trial,” to use his own words, and, while not giving the current occupant of the Oval Office unconditional approval, excoriates his opponents. One must admire Mr. Hewitt’s ability to steer a careful middle course between the Scylla of unqualified support for Donald Trump and the Charybdis of recognizing his utter moral and intellectual unfitness for public office.
