Darrow’s Appraisal of Roosevelt
Sep. 28th, 2019 02:25 amThose who are even mildly on the Left generally take Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal as obviously a good thing, a necessary reform of the savage capitalism which had (supposedly) led to the Great Depression. I came across an appraisal by Clarence Darrow from back in 1933, criticizing FDR’s failure to address real problems, and the cruel, useless policy of buying up piglets to kill and bury them, instead of letting them be raised to provide food for hungry people. How many people know that Darrow was a Georgist?
Clarence Darrow was by no means the only critic of the New Deal who was not a Wall Street tycoon. The world was and is more complicated than the impression I got from reading my American history textbook back in fifth grade.
PS: That link doesn’t work. I may go back and try to fix it again; my attempts so far have not worked.
