There has been controversy lately about the New York Times’s 1619 Project, which, from what conservatives have been saying about it, not only focuses on America’s faults, especially the great national sin of slavery, but treats slavery as fundamental to everything else in the country’s history. Timothy Sandefur has an article in Reason pointing out that being tainted by slavery is not the same as being built on slavery, and that the Constitution is still, in Frederick Douglass’s words, a glorious liberty document. Leftists and admirers of the Confederacy should both be offended.
