Returning to the morning of Saturday, July 29, there were a few questions for Karl Widerquist about land rent and basic income; then came the second half of the session on “Common Resources and Basic Income,”with Vitnarae Kang, who was not with us physically, but attempting to speak with us from Korea via the Intertubes. Unfortunately, there were technical difficulties.

Meanwhile, a preview speaker talked about history. Ms. Kang has policy proposals in South Korea, which was poor a few decades ago, but has now become a prosperous country. Decades ago, it had a dictatorial president, Park Chung Hee; more recently, his daughter served as president, and was finally impeached.

One presidential candidate proposes a basic income financed by land value taxation, with benefits to every citizen in South Korea, and benefits, also, to the elderly and disabled. I couldn’t fully understand what was being said, between the technical difficulties and the speaker’s Korean accent.

To be continued.
