On the morning of Saturday, July 29, we had Open Mike. When I entered the meeting room, Herbert Barry was talking about the inheritance tax; that and land value taxation should reduce the tendency of wealth to concentrate. User fees are also good. He is against sales tax, VAT, and income tax, especially on wages.

Then John Kelly spoke. There are taxes which are not Georgist, but are possible: head tax, car sticker, garbage collection fee, etc. These do not harm the economy. Someone objected that they harm people. He replied that he was not advocating them, just pointing out that they don't discourage economic activity.

Lindy Davies said to be careful with the word "earn." Not all ways of acquiring money are earning it.

Then Marty Rowland, Ph.D. and P.E., spoke. He's with the Henry George School of Social Science in New York, and has spoken with Lindy and others. (The previous president of the HGS of New York had alienated a lot of Georgists; I hope that the new leadership will bring the organization back on track.) He said that he has a What Would Henry George Say? column on the School website.

Dr. Rowland also said that in Suffolk County, 80% of the people use septic tanks; there's a Georgist angle. He invited us to give him a call or whatever, and announced that the Henry George School was again up and running.

To be continued.
