Cherimoya

I bought a cherimoya at the supermarket, and ate it with my lunch today, the first time in years that I've eaten a cherimoya. If you're not familiar with this tropical fruit, it tastes somewhat like a strawberry-flavored banana cream, with black seeds, which should not be eaten, embedded in the custard-like fruit. The British call it a custard apple, and I can understand why.

It's good as a rare and rather expensive treat. If I ate cherimoyas several times a week, I would probably long to vary my routine with an exotic orange, apple, or slice of melon.

I'm jealous. The closest thing I've come to finding custard apples lately has been picking pawpaws, which are in the same family but different. When we went to Australia back in 2009 we were in northern Queensland at the right time to get freshly picked custard apples. My understanding is that the custard apples there aren't quite the same, being a hybrid between cherimoya and sugar apple trees, but they sure were good.

The only supermarket I shop at (unless you consider Costco part of that category) is Lotte. I go to the one in Chantilly. I love it because it has, in my opinion, almost every fruit/vegetable/root/herb/seed I could ever imagine. But by this I mean hard to find ones. Lots of Asian pears or fruit too (those can be expensive!!) and Asian produce. I bought my mom many pounds of Korean hot peppers from Lotte and sent them to her since they are near impossible to find otherwise. Their more commonly found fruits are ok (meaning apples, peaches, etc.).

It’s also where I stock up on spices, rice, and Korean stuff. Also Chinese sauces, like the spicy chili crisp which I actually should not eat, and black bean paste (also should not eat).

My mom likes this place so much that one visit I had to find her the closest hotel to this supermarket that met her hotel needs but also wasn’t a long distance away. I think she likes it because she sees so much of the food that she was used to in Korea.

Anyways, this came to mind re: exotic fruit. ☺️ One year my friend suggested I just buy one or two of everything in the exotic fruit category and just try them to see if I like them. I haven’t done that yet, maybe I will try to make a habit of that each time I visit Lotte going forward.

This location also has a nice French/Vietnamese/Japanese/probably other ethnicities bakery. I love their cappuccino loaf cake, it is a treat for me when I purchase it. ☺️ It makes me just want to randomly add instant coffee to everything I bake. 😂😂😂🙄☺️

It’s crazy busy on weekends, I try to go during off hours and mask 😷 up. The last time I wore both my N95 and a face shield and a young man with his girlfriend (or wife?) actually took the time to not only stare but point at me for quite some time. 😂😂😂

I laugh inside because he must have a very shallow life, and he doesn’t know me so I move on. ☺️

But the supermarket I like. Closer to you would be Hmart or maybe 99 ranch (in the category of Asian supermarkets) which are perhaps more upscale-ish, but pricier and far less selection.

I used to go to the Whole Foods at Fair Lakes (or is it called Fair Oaks?) because they have homemade tortillas which I LOVE. The only other Whole Foods I know which has those (bakery, homemade tortillas) is one in DC on P street btw 15th and 16th St NW. Apparently the bakery selections are not identical for each store. I used to get them at the DC one when I worked in DC.

Ok, done with my long winded grocery store comment ♥️
