My Town in the News
Apr. 8th, 2023 01:07 pmArlington has passed a relatively minor housing reform authorizing the construction of some missing middle housing, so the town where I live has been in the news. It doesn’t seem to me that this is likely to make an enormous difference one way or the other, although it might improve the situation slightly.
A local independent and perennial candidate, Audrey Clement, has opposed the reform. I remember talking with her, and exchanging emails some years ago; I met her campaigning at the local farmers’ market, and tried to get her interested in Georgist reform, without success. She objected that land value taxation could result in more construction; as I recall, I asked her whether she wanted a greener Arlington, a greener Metro area, or a greener world, telling her that there could be conflicts between these goals.
One trouble is that people want affordable housing, and they want restrictive zoning, and the want green space, and sometimes they cannot see that these worthy goals give rise to conflicts with no perfect solutions.
