I got out in the afternoon and did some grocery shopping, wearing a raincoat and carrying an umbrella, which seemed only prudent at the time. Walking back from the store, I found that the sky had cleared, the day was warmer, and some people were dressed as if for summer, which I found quite pleasant. A few hours later, it was raining, and had turned cooler, but at least I had a nice outing.

Happy New Year, my friends. I expect the coronavirus to continue killing people, but perhaps not so many, as vaccination becomes more widespread among people of all ages who are not really trying for the Darwin Award. I have at least the hope that political divisions will work out so that the Trumpublicans will not be able to seize power, and the Democrats will not be able to increase unneeded government interference and the already excessive national debt by one half so much as they want to.

To quote from Operation Chaos (Poul Anderson may have been quoting someone else), “The world is going to Hell in a handbasket, and it always has been.” There are always things wrong, but let us hope for possibility for happiness in the coming year.

Always liked the phrase "to Hell in a handbasket," as being very evocative despite not literally meaning anything. I think the "and always has been" is a key that most people forget.

Happy New Year to you too.
