There is proposal on the table to replace Detroit’s current property tax with land value taxation. I would be glad to see this enacted, provided that it is done right, but there is opposition both within the city and in the Michigan Legislature, although the mayor is an advocate. It will take more than LVT to fix Detroit, but LVT may be an important step in the right direction. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was severely blighted until a two-rate property tax turned it around.

We’ll see what happens.
