To continue with the first major presentation on the morning of Wednesday, July 24, 2019, Wyn Achenbaum spoke on “History of the Georgist Movement in Pennsylvania,” focusing on “The Single Taxers of Philadelphia and Delaware, and a few from beyond.” A few of the luminaries were Joseph Fels (soap maker), Robert F. Powell, and Katherine Fisher Ross (the grandmother of Mike Curtis). There were many others.

There were quotes from The Standard, Henry George’s newspaper, and from other 19th century newspapers. The first meeting of the Anti-Poverty Society, started by Henry George and Father Edward McGlynn, among others, was on March 29, 1887. There was a quote from the Philadelphia Inquirer about Benjamin Franklin’s way of escaping poverty versus that of the Anti-Poverty Society.

William J. Atkinson, who married Henry George’s daughter Jenny, was the first president of the Philadelphia Anti-Poverty Society. Jackson Ralston started setting type at the age of fourteen, and later became a lawyer, and worked for the AFL, representing Samuel Gompers and others.

Eighteen single taxers were held in the Dover Jail. Single-taxers for free speech versus the authorities. There’s a picture of the Dover Jail Single Tax Club. The sheriff treated them well; they were confined with long-term prisoners, and (ironically) with tramps.

Mrs. Achenbaum mentioned Joseph Fels and Fels’ Naptha Soap.

Henry George Jr. married Marie Hitch.

Then we were out of time, and took a mid-morning break.
