Oct. 16th, 2018

To continue with the 2017 Georgist Conference in O’Fallon, Illinois, during the later afternoon of July 30, 2017, we held the Council of Georgist Organizations business meeting, which I attended, being both the voting representative of a Georgist organization and an individual member (individuals can pay dues and join, but they don’t vote).  We discussed plans for the 2018 conference in Baltimore, possible locations and events for future conferences, the state of our finances, and other matters.  In due course, we adjourned.  I did take more notes than that, but I suspect that, aside from confidentiality issues, very few people would be interested in reading them.

After that, we went to the reception with cash bar, and then sat down to a banquet.  Our after dinner speaker was Mike Curtis, who did a magnificent job.  He quoted Henry George to the effect that in a corrupted republic, demagogues would be succeeded only by worse demagogues, which seems to me to describe the 2016 election.  He had much else to say, about bridging the gap between left and right, for example.  Each side sees part of the truth on economic issues, but neither side sees it all, because neither side consistently grasps the difference between what human beings produce by their individual efforts, and the land, which they don’t.  Unfortunately, I didn’t bring my notebook to the banquet; it would have been gauche to put that and a pen on the table beside my plate, so I cannot fairly present or even summarize his whole speech.

The next morning, we held our friendship brunch, and went our various ways.
