On Thursday morning, July 25, 2019, I got to chatting in the breakfast room with a woman who was in the hotel for other reasons (she worked for IBM, I believe), and I told her a little about Georgism and what our conference was about; she seemed interested. This partially accounts for my arriving late to Open Mike, where I heard the tail end of a brief speech by Bob Jene, and noted that he spoke of upzoning leading to higher assessments in Chicago.
Then someone else — Randy Prince, I learned — gave a brief speech about Oregon, where there are natural hazards like landslides and earthquakes. The Legislature is at fault, he said, for not providing notification and resining of the most dangerous areas. Houses and factories are built in dangerous locations; the government should downzone these and upzone elsewhere. There is currently no mechanism to compensate people for rezoning.
