Phone Calls

One thing about teleworking is that I get more non-business phone calls, even though my cellphone would sometimes ring when I was at the office. Since my office telephone is set to forward calls to my home landline, I don’t know, when I pick up the phone whether it’s a call from a patent attorney, or a personal call, or something from a telemarketing pest. Occasionally, too, the phone will ring once, and then stop; I don’t know whether someone starts to call, and realizes that he’s dialed the wrong number, or whether it’s some glitch in the telephone system.

The other day, I got a call asking for “Emily.” When I said that no one of that name lives here, he said that maybe I could help, and began his spiel about some kind of police foundation. I don’t know whether it’s a genuinely worthy project, or simply a scam, or a group that defends cops like Jeronimo Yanez and Derek Chauvin; I have repeatedly said that the caller can send me written literature about this group if he wants, but I will not make any donations based on a telemarketing call. But he just doesn’t learn, or maybe he isn’t allowed to remove my number from his computer database.

This time, when he started his pitch, I told him to place me on his do-not-call list. My words didn’t seem to stop him from continuing the sales pitch, so I just hung up.
