Coming home on the Metro train Friday evening, I entered a car with (among other passengers) a loud black man who greeted me, and got into a conversation. He said that he worked at the YMCA, and displayed a badge to confirm it. He said that he was voting for Trump, because in his job, he saw veterans with PTSD, and Trump would get them the help they needed.

I didn’t attack Trump head-on, but I did raise questions about various things that Trump had done, like grabbing money appropriated for soldiers’ housing to use for his border wall, and about the unemployment rate now being lower under President Biden, for example. He said that Trump would Make America Great Again; I said that that was his slogan, but the reality was different. He said that it was a country for whites and blacks, but not for illegal aliens; he was confident that Trump would throw them all out of the country, “including the ones born here”. I pointed out that the Constitution, which I am under oath to support and defend, includes the Fourteenth Amendment, providing that everyone born in the United States and under the jurisdiction thereof is an American citizen.

And so forth, for the eleven or so minutes until the train reached my stop. I didn’t understand everything he said, partly because of his accent, partly because his statements were not always coherent, but I did get an impression of his thinking. He boasted of following the news and being well-informed., and I don’t think he was altogether wrong about that, but I suspect him of relying on dubious sources of information. Our conversation was educational, in its way, teaching me about the views and attitudes which some people have, and it is worth keeping in mind that Dishonest Donald has non-zero support from blacks and other minorities.
