To Norfolk
Oct. 8th, 2023 03:54 pmI’m on an Amtrak train approaching Norfolk, Virginia, where the Virginia Municipal League is meeting, and the Center for the Study of Economics has or will have a booth. Together with Joshua Vincent, or esteemed Director, I will try to educate the local officials and other attendees about the benefits of taxing land instead of buildings (and wages, sales, etc.).
I recently bought a new package of toothbrushes, and threw out the old ones; I was planning to open the new package in the hotel in Norfolk, but I fear that I left it behind. I do have the important stuff: clothes, including the Henry George Sesquicentennial tie that I’m wearing, and some brochures that a fellow Georgist (thank you, Sue) mailed to me in advance of the meeting.
We passed through Petersburg not too long ago, and I was reminded of the long siege during the later stages of the Civil War, but I didn’t get out to see what there might be in the way of local museums, or perhaps preserved remains of the trenches.
Some celebrate Columbus Day today, and some Indigenous Peoples Day. As I have mentioned in previous years, I celebrate Bartolome de las Casas Day.
