Descent into Madness

When Donald Trump did well on Super Tuesday, I posted that, in my humble opinion, a substantial percentage of the electorate had taken leave of its senses. Subsequent events demonstrated that this was indeed the case.

It is now reported that a majority of Republicans rate Trump as a better president than Abraham Lincoln, and better than Eisenhower and other Republican presidents, excepting Ronald Reagan. It does occur to me that some of those polled may have projected current political alignments into the past, and assumed that Lincoln was a Democrat; I remember when Democratic Representative Charles Rangel said that the Republicans had not won the Civil War.

Back in 2016, some sane people argued for Trump on the basis that grown-ups in his administration would keep him from doing too much harm, and that Hillary Clinton’s judicial and regulatory nominees would have been calamitous; they may have been right. But how could any informed person who follows the news think that Dishonest Donald has been a great president?

I suspect a lot of people are answering polls by not "what I honestly believe" but by "what will most piss off the opposing tribe." Let's face it, a poll result saying Trump is ranked below whomever would be celebrated by Dems, and Reps know that, and don't want to make Dems happy. Hence, Trump > Lincoln.

Tribalism eats everything.
